British Academy Launches Funding Call for Knowledge Frontiers Projects 2021
The British Academy is providing a call for proposals for UK-based researchers across all disciplines within the social sciences and the humanities to develop international interdisciplinary research projects, in collaboration with colleagues from the natural, engineering and/or medical sciences.
The Academy encourages broad and innovative interpretations of the themes of technology, nature and humanity, and how they relate to international questions and challenges. Applications are encouraged to bring together different communities of expertise, for example academic, professional, business, lay, or community. Projects could bring together different forms of collaboration, between lived experience, modelling, and data science.
The purpose of each project will be to develop new international research ideas. Projects will also need to demonstrate an innovative and interdisciplinary partnership between researchers in the social sciences or the humanities on the one hand, and counterparts in the natural, engineering and/or medical sciences on the other. The Academy is looking to fund applications that break new ground in the collaborations – international and interdisciplinary – they support, and the research they aim to undertake.
The lead applicant must be a researcher from the humanities or social sciences, be based at a UK university or research institute and be of postdoctoral or above status (or have equivalent research experience). Co-applicants in the natural, engineering and/or medical sciences are required.
Awards are available for up to £200,000 for 24 months in duration (with Full Economic Costing at 100%).
Funding can be used to support:
The time of the PI and Co-Applicants
Postdoctoral (or equivalent) research assistance
Travel, fieldwork and related expenses
Networking costs
University costs in hosting and supporting the project, with award-holders expected to base the division of spend on the Full Economic Costing basis at 100%.
Applications must be submitted by the deadline of 21 October 2020.
Applicants are advised to submit applications at least 5 days prior to the deadline to allow for institutional approval.
