Supergen Energy Networks Hub Launches Felxible Fund for New Entrants to Energy Networks Community

The Supergen Energy Networks Hub (SEN) is a £9 million research project funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC). The hub brings together collaborative teams from industry, academia, government and civil society to carry out impactful, interdisciplinary research to enable energy networks to become a driving force towards a rapid, safe and just transition to net zero.

SEN has launched an opportunity to support new entrants to the energy networks community from UK higher education institutions (HEIs) to conduct innovative projects that explore novel applications of mathematics, data science, and artificial intelligence (AI) within the context of energy networks.

Projects may address one or more of the following themes:

  • Risk and resilience in energy networks.
  • Innovative uses of publicly available data, especially large datasets.
  • Application of mathematics not currently applied to energy networks, in pursuit of net zero.
  • AI techniques to understand, model, or manage complexity and vulnerability within energy systems.

Proposals are encouraged that seek to leverage advanced techniques, including AI, machine learning, and novel analytical methods, to address pressing challenges in energy networks. Interdisciplinary and cross-cutting proposals that span multiple themes are welcome.

Project Investigators (PI) must be based at a UK HEI. Proposals are particularly welcomed from individuals or teams who have not previously applied their research in the Energy Networks sector.

A total of £200,000 is available through the opportunity. The maximum that will be awarded to any one project is £100,000.

Applications should be submitted by the 20 June 2025 deadline.
