CEFRES/Charles University Postdoctoral Contracts

Closing Date: 15/09/2025

Two postdoctoral positions at CEFRES, Czech Republic are available to humanities and social science researchers outside of the Czech Republic.

The Centre français de recherche en sciences sociales (CEFRES – French Research Center in Humanities and Social Sciences) was founded in Prague in 1991 with the intention of resuming scientific exchange between France and post-Communist Central Europe. Since its formation, CEFRES has built up a network of research teams operating in France, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia. It became a CNRS Unité mixte de recherche (UMR) in 2007 and is part of the UMIFRE network.

In partnership with Charles University in Prague, CEFRES is offering two postdoctoral contracts. The postdoctoral fellows will be affiliated with CEFRES and with a Charles University department relevant to their research field.

The following two posts are available:

  • Position 1: A postdoctoral position within the framework of the CEFRES research axes

This position is intended for researchers whose project may align with one of the three CEFRES research axes:

  • Axis 1: Displacements, disorientations and shifts: people, knowledge and practices
  • Axis 2: Norms and transgressions
  • Axis 3: Objects, traces, mapping: everyday spaces

Preference will be given to projects whose subject is located in Central Europe, at the junction between this location and other areas, or in comparison with other ‘cultural areas’.

  • Position 2: A postdoctoral position within the framework of the project: ‘Paper Bonds: Bookmaking for Kin, Friends and Self in Contemporary Europe and the Middle East’

The project explores self-made books and private bookmaking practices in contemporary Europe and the Middle East, focusing on their symbolic, material and social dimensions. The project calls upon the disciplines of anthropology, book history and sociology of literature. Researchers working on contemporary bookmaking practices from the perspective of book history, anthropology, sociology, literary studies and other disciplines such as information and communication sciences are welcome to apply.

The postdoctoral fellows will be affiliated with CEFRES and will benefit from collaboration with the Oriental Institute of the Czech Academy of Sciences and a chosen department of Charles University. The position may also lead to other collaborations based on the projects.
