RAI UK Launches Grant to Support Collaborative Responsible AI Research
The Responsible AI UK (RAI UK) programme is a £31 million strategic investment by the UK Government in responsible and trustworthy AI that supports research on the technical, social, legal and ethical challenges surrounding responsible artificial intelligence (RAI).
RAI UK has launched an opportunity to support collaboration in the domain of RAI to ensure society deploys and uses AI in a responsible way. The opportunity covers travel and subsistence for UK researchers to collaborate within the UK or internationally, or for UK-based researchers to host international visitors (ie, flight and subsistence, accommodation in the UK).
The following criteria for collaborations apply:
- Standard UKRI organisation eligibility rules apply.
- The application should lie within UKRI remit.
- Collaborations should primarily focus on research that aligns to the mission of RAI UK.
- Proposals may either develop new collaborators or build on existing relationships.
- Partnerships can involve one or more research organisations in one or more countries.
- Applicants can collaborate with UK-based or international research organisations (including universities, public sector research organisations and publicly funded research institutes).
- Partners may be in a low- or middle-income country. However, compliance with Official Development Assistance (ODA) criteria is not required.
- Collaborations that include convening of communities for focused events with clear research objectives are welcome.
- Industry and other non-academic engagement is strongly encouraged and, where appropriate, applicants are encouraged to engage with their partners and co-develop ideas and plans for further collaboration in the future.
Projects are encouraged to leverage the synergy of the proposed collaboration and demonstrate clear routes to impact to address both imminent and long-term needs of industry, society and government.
Up to £200,000 is available to fund an anticipated 10 projects. Grant requests should not be for less than £20,000 and may be up to £50,000 with exceptional justification.
