NWO Technology for Innovative Nuclear Reactors and Fuels (KIC)
Closing Date: 29/01/2026
Grant funding to support Dutch consortia in advancing nuclear reactor and fuel technologies, with emphasis on safety, extreme-condition materials, and monitoring systems to strengthen the national nuclear energy knowledge base.
The Nederlandse Organisatie voor Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek (NWO – Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research) contributes to Dutch innovation policy with part of its programming. This programming is based on the mission-driven top sectors and innovation policy of the central government, which is aimed at solving major social challenges. The underlying knowledge and innovation agendas (KIAs) and the contributions of NWO and other parties are part of the Knowledge and Innovation Covenant (KIC) 2024-2027.
The Technology for Innovative Nuclear Reactors and Fuels (Technologie voor innovatieve nucleaire reactoren en splijtstoffen) is part of the multi-year National Nuclear Energy Research Programme, which aims to strengthen and future-proof the Dutch knowledge base on nuclear energy. The focus of this call is on nuclear reactor and fuel technology.
The proposed research must contribute to each of the following three areas:
- The development of Generation IV reactors (larger reactors).
- Advanced modular reactors (AMRs) and microreactors.
- New fuel concepts.
The following three intersecting themes must be addressed:
- Reactor safety.
- Research into materials under the extreme conditions encountered during operation.
- Monitoring systems.
Addressing each of the three above themes is a requirement.
