NWO Hydrogen and Hydrogen Carriers: Import, Conversion, Transport and Storage (NGF)

Closing Date: 10/03/2026

Grant funding is available to support a consortium of researchers, public and private organisations for research into the import, conversion, transport and storage of hydrogen (carriers).

The Nationaal Groeifonds (NGF – National Growth Fund) is a government funding programme supporting projects that promote sustainable and structural long-term economic growth. The Fund invests, among other things, in sustainable research, development and innovation projects. The Nederlandse Organisatie voor Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek (NWO – Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research) is involved in several projects as organiser for NGF research funding programmes.

The Hydrogen and Hydrogen Carriers: Import, Conversion, Transport and Storage (Waterstof en waterstofdragers: import, conversie, transport en opslag) aims to achieve concrete realisation of GroenvermogenNL Work Package 2: Hydrogen and hydrogen carriers: import, conversion, transport, and storage.

The call focuses on breakthroughs and innovations with technical and economic potential for large-scale import, conversion, transport, and storage of hydrogen and hydrogen carriers. One consortium will be established through workshops. Research areas are:

  1. Import, transport, and storage of liquid hydrogen (LH2).
  2. Import, conversion, transport, and storage of hydrogen carriers.
    1. Ammonia.
    2. Liquid organic hydrogen carriers (LOHC).
    3. Other hydrogen carriers.
  3. Development and optimisation of port infrastructure, supply chains, and conversion hubs.

The project this call aims to realise must focus on the development of solutions that contribute to the realisation of a climate-neutral society, where a green hydrogen ecosystem makes a substantial contribution.
