Two Calls Launched Under the Google Academic Research Awards for 2026

This funding cycle, Google is interested in topics focused on quantum computing.

Google holds global open calls for proposals, Google Academic Research Awards (GARAs), that support groundbreaking foundational and applied research in computing and technology.

For the 2026 funding cycle, Google is interested in topics focused on quantum computing and has launched two calls for proposals within these fields:

Early Fault-Tolerant Quantum Algorithms & Applications – this GARA focuses on the immediate frontier of quantum computing: the early fault-tolerant era. This call for proposals seeks to identify algorithms and applications that can run on early fault-tolerant devices – specifically targeting research that utilises a relatively small number of logical qubits to solve classically intractable problems.

Quantum Computing Security – this GARA focuses on the underexplored aspect of the quantum computing security landscape and the potential for practical exploits targeting the classical-to-quantum interface.

Applications are open to academic researchers who are currently advising students and conducting research in technology and computing at academic institutions. Awards are generally made up to $100,000, but Google may consider larger amounts for exceptional proposals that demonstrate a clear and compelling rationale for the increased funding.
