ADEME GRAINE Call – Production, Valorisation of Biomass and Preservation of Ecosystems

Closing Date: 26/09/2025

Funding to support biomass production in line with the sustainable development of the bioeconomy.

France’s Environment and Energy Management Agency (ADEME) contributes to the implementation of public policy regarding the environment, energy and sustainable development. It provides expert advice to businesses, local authorities and communities, government bodies and the public at large, to enable them to establish and consolidate their environmental initiatives. As part of this work, the agency helps finance research projects related to the environment, energy and sustainable development.

ADEME’s GRAINE call for projects aims to support ambitious scientific research and development projects that focus on a genuine research question, while addressing operational/application issues related to the sustainable development of the bioeconomy. The aim is to respond to social needs in the context of climate change by supporting the sectors for biomass production, while limiting the ecological, health and socio-economic impacts, with a view of resilience.

The call is built around four distinct and complementary areas for the development of the bioeconomy through sustainable management, production, and valorisation of biomass:

  • Axis 1: Sustainable and resilient biomass production that preserves environments and resources, aims to develop and improve biomass production and exploitation systems and sectors.
  • Axis 2: Eco-efficient transformation and valorisation of biomass while assessing the impacts on the production systems concerned, aims to develop new processes for the transformation and valorisation of biomass (eg residues or bio-waste) by integrating issues related to the circular economy and the reduction of environmental impacts (including those related to the upstream stages of biomass production and mobilisation).
  • Axis 3: Tools and methods for assessing soil health and the environmental impacts of the bioeconomy, aims to develop methods and tools for assessing soil health for a comprehensive and sustainable approach to biomass management within sectors and territories.
  • Axis 4: Action research in the humanities and social sciences for the transition of bioeconomy systems and sectors, aims to identify and analyse the levers for the transition of bioeconomy systems and sectors using action research projects based in experimental territories and/or projects mobilising the humanities and social sciences.
