Alzheimer’s Research UK Launches Research & Senior Research Fellowships

Awards will advance the careers of Alzheimer’s researchers at different career stages

Alzheimer’s Research UK is a UK-based dementia research charity. Its specialism is funding world-class research to find preventions, treatments and a cure for dementia.

The charity is now accepting applications for its Research Fellowships and Senior Research Fellowships schemes to advance the careers of Alzheimer’s researchers at different stages of their careers:

Alzheimer’s Research UK Research Fellowships

These awards support the professional development of PhD qualified non-clinical researchers and help them establish independence. Researchers must have delivered previous research projects with evidence of impactful outputs, such as publications and conference presentations, and have clear plans to establish their own research ‘niche’.

The fellowship enables early career researchers, working within the field of Alzheimer’s research, to carry out work within the remit of Alzheimer’s Research UK, which covers biomedical research into treatment, diagnosis and prevention in Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias.

The Research Fellowship scheme provides funds for salary for up to three years, plus a contribution of up to £20,000 per year towards research, animal and travel costs.

Fellows are required to have secured a Supervisor(s), a senior established investigator in the institution where the Fellowship is to be held. The prospective fellow and Lead Supervisor must be based in a UK academic/research institution. However, the application can include researchers or institutions outside the UK.

Alzheimer’s Research UK Senior Research Fellowship

These awards are designed to support excellent clinical and non-clinical researchers who have a strong track record in dementia research but have not yet achieved tenure or tenure-track status and who are on the verge of a ‘transition to independence’. The awards are intended to help Fellows become internationally recognised within the field of biomedical dementia research.

The awards support PhD-qualified clinical or non-clinical researchers with a demonstrated track record of original and productive research (having had typically at least one previous post-doctoral appointment). It is meant to support researchers towards their transition to lead independent groups. Research question should be framed to understand/diagnose/treat/reduce risk of Alzheimer’s disease.

The Fellowships are worth £420,000 over four years with the possibility of a one-year extension worth £120,000. Activities carried out in the one-year extension should build on the findings of the Fellowship, rather than continuing with ongoing activities.

Prospective Senior Fellows must have secured the sponsorship of a senior established investigator in the institution where the fellowship is to be held, and the sponsor will provide the facilities required for the research programme.
