Battery Innovation – Concept Development and Feasibility Studies Competitions

Closing Date: 17/12/2025

This funding opportunity supports collaborative UK projects developing battery technologies, led by a UK registered business and including at least one UK registered SME.

The Battery Innovation Competition is jointly operated by Innovate UK (IUK) and the Department for Business and Trade (DBT). (IUK is delivering the programme on behalf of the DBT.)

The competition supports projects that advance battery technologies in the UK. It is delivered through two strands: concept development and feasibility studies. The competition aims to accelerate the development and commercialisation of battery solutions, strengthen the domestic supply chain and increase the UK’s position in the global battery market. Projects must demonstrate market demand within a chosen sector and explain how the proposed innovation addresses specific industry challenges.

Proposals may cover any part of the battery value chain and must consider financial viability, sustainability, environmental impact and relevant regulations. Eligible areas include raw materials, advanced cell materials, cell design and components, process and manufacturing tools, quality control and diagnostics, and testing, simulation and digital tools. Projects are expected to show how the technology could improve electrification across sectors and contribute to UK industrial competitiveness.

The competition also supports the growth of businesses within the battery sector by encouraging innovation, developing supply chains and attracting new market entrants. Applicants must show how their solution could remove barriers to development and enable future commercial deployment. Projects should demonstrate potential economic benefit and alignment with the wider strategic priorities of the UK battery industry.
