The British Lichen Society (BLS) is a charitable membership society for the promotion and advancement of the study, teaching and conservation of lichens and their habitats. It has a global remit but has a special emphasis on the British Isles. The BLS works to raise public awareness of lichens and of their importance as indicators of the health of the environment, and organises field meetings, workshops and recording projects and publishes a highly regarded scientific journal, The Lichenologist.
BLS provides several grants, scholarships and studentships to support the work and study of its members in the UK and from overseas.
BLS launched a dedicated funding programme for research and field work with a focus on conservation and habitat surveys. The grants is designed to support research on notable or threatened lichens and their habitats, with the aim to increase the understanding of their conservation and management.
