DFG Launches New Priority Programme on Recyclable Fibre-Reinforced Polymers

Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG – German Research Foundation) has launched a new six-year Priority Programme titled New Recyclable Composites (SPP 2528). The initiative is structured around two three-year funding phases. Proposals are now sought for the first three-year funding period.

The programme aims to develop recyclable fibre-reinforced polymers (FRPs) that support one or more reuse cycles without compromising performance. Key focus areas include mechanical benchmarks such as elasticity, strength, and fatigue life, alongside ecological considerations such as de-fossilisation and reduced energy and resource consumption.

The programme covers the following three approaches:

  • Soluble Matrix Materials: separation of fibres and matrix of the FRP and return to material cycle.
  • Disposable FRP: utilisation of layered structure of the FRP to separate the individual fibre layers from each other. In this approach the fibres and matrix remain bonded together in the layer, enabling direct processing into new FRP components.
  • Self-Reinforced FRP: direct reuse (ie reshaping or melting) of unmixed FRP which consist of the same polymer, the same polymer group or very compatible materials.

Bio-based, recyclable material components for reinforcing and matrix materials are welcome in all areas.

Researchers based in Germany, or at German research institutions abroad, who have completed their academic training are eligible to apply. International researchers may participate if their contribution adds value to the programme.

Funding is available for a period of three years and covers project-related costs such as personnel, materials and instrumentation.

Interested parties are invited to an online roundtable event on 13 June 2025. The event will offer additional information and is designed to improve the coherence of the Priority Programme while also offering opportunities to discuss possible collaborations or joint proposals.

The deadline for the submission of project proposals is 29 October 2025.
