Entries Invited for Sophie Coe Food History Prize

First awarded in 1995, the Sophie Coe Prize rewards writing on the subject of food history in the English language. It is awarded annually for an essay or article of up to 10,000 words on any aspect of the history of food. The prize commemorates Sophie Coe, the food historian and author, who died in 1994, and is funded by the Sophie Coe Memorial Fund.

The prize is awarded to the author of an original, informative article or essay on any aspect of food history. All aspects of food history, food and cookery qualify, as long as the work demonstrates originality, new research or new insights.

Books themselves are not eligible, although something taken from a book can be considered (eg an essay from a book of essays by various authors or an appendix on a particular food topic in a book on a wider subject). Any such article or essay must be free-standing and self-contained like an essay. Technical papers will be considered provided that they embody a fully comprehensible account of the implications for food history.

Entries will normally range from 2,500 words up to a maximum total of 10,000 words, including notes and bibliography. An entry will normally be the work of a single author. An entry from two or more co-authors will be considered on the same basis. Entries must be submitted in the English language, even if originally written in another language. Work published in the 12 months preceding the deadline for submission is eligible as is work recently written but not yet published.

Entry is open to authors of original, informative articles or essays on any aspect of food history. Authors may be based in any country. Someone other than the author may submit an author’s work as an entry subject to the same rules and provided that the author has given prior consent.

The prize is £1,500 and is a single prize (ie it cannot be divided).

Entries must be submitted by the deadline of 23 April 2021.
