European Commission’s Innovation Fund Awards €2.9 Billion to Net Zero Projects
The European Commission has announced that 61 projects will receive a share of €2.9 billion through the December 2024 Call for Net Zero Technologies launched under the Innovation Fund.
The Innovation Fund is the Commission’s dedicated instrument to help bring highly innovative low-carbon technologies in EU Member States to the market. It supports both small-scale projects with a value between €2.5 million and €7.5 million as well as large-scale projects worth €7.5 million or more.
In December 2024, the Innovation Fund launched its first call dedicated to supporting net zero technologies to strengthen Europe’s technological leadership and speed up the deployment of innovative decarbonisation solutions.
The selected projects span 19 industrial sectors, 18 countries and different scales. The focus is on energy-intensive industries, renewable energy and energy storage, net-zero mobility and buildings, cleantech manufacturing and industrial carbon management.
The projects are projected to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by approximately 221 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent over their first decade of operation, contributing to the EU’s objective of achieving climate neutrality by 2050.
The Commission is preparing to launch the next Innovation Fund calls in early December 2025.
