Frontier AI Discovery Competition
Closing Date: 10/06/2026
UK-based businesses, research organisations, charities, not-for-profits, public sector bodies and NGOs can apply for funding to carry out feasibility studies for frontier AI and foundation model projects, with successful applicants invited to develop larger collaborative R&D projects.
This competition is operated by Innovate UK (IUK). It supports the development of frontier Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML) and foundation models in the UK through a two-phase programme. Phase 1, Frontier AI Discovery, focuses on feasibility studies for collaborative research and development projects, with successful applicants invited to progress to Phase 2.
Projects must align with one of four thematic areas: AI-enabled health and life sciences, advanced materials, secure AI for national security and defence or fundamental AI. Proposals should aim to develop new AI and ML capabilities, including foundation models, defined as generalisable models adaptable across multiple applications, and frontier AI systems demonstrating state of the art or novel performance.
Applicants are required to form consortia and assess the technical and commercial feasibility of proposed innovations. Outputs must include a technical proposal for Phase 2, a business model evaluation and evidence of consortium development and commitment.
Projects must focus on AI as the primary technical contribution and deliver AI-driven products, processes or services that address the identified thematic priorities. Proposals must clearly outline the innovation, intended impact and stakeholder engagement approach.
