Frontier to forefront: the ascent of AI in modern research
In April, at the European Association of Research Managers and Administrators (EARMA) Conference, Idox proudly launched its latest research paper titled “Frontier to forefront: the ascent of AI in modern research”. The paper delves into governments’ attempts to address the growing influence of AI on national policy and explores how the international research community is facing the impact of rapidly evolving AI on traditional working practices while ensuring the continued integrity and validity of research.
According to Chris Drake, Senior Researcher at Idox and co-author of the paper, “It was truly rewarding to explore the complexities of AI’s integration into research practices. Our team is thrilled to have the opportunity to share our insights and contribute to the ongoing dialogue surrounding this transformative technology.”
From its beginnings in the 1950s, Artificial Intelligence (AI) has always been a groundbreaking field at the frontier of research. In recent years, a slow march to realise true AI has been replaced by rapid advances due in large part to the emergence of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI).
Chris went on to say “Policy initiatives, such as the European Commission’s tailored approach to AI in science and innovation, underscore the imperative of harnessing AI’s potential while addressing ethical considerations. National strategies, including France’s ambitious SNIA initiative, highlight the commitment to positioning AI as a cornerstone of economic and societal progress.”

Universities and research institutions are adapting their approaches to accommodate the ethical use of AI tools, emphasising the importance of academic integrity and collaboration. Guidelines published by the European Commission, sector representative bodies and individual institutions aim to promote responsible use of AI across the research community, balancing innovation with risk mitigation. As the international research community embraces the opportunities and challenges presented by AI, collaborative efforts and responsible practices will be essential in realising its full potential.
