IKI Opens €8 Million Climate and Biodiversity Funding Call in Run-Up to COP31

German organisations can apply for collaborative projects advancing local climate action and marine ecosystem resilience in the Global South.

The International Climate Initiative (IKI) has opened its 2026 call for Medium Grants, with an overall budget of €8 million available for innovative climate and biodiversity projects.

Civil society organisations, academic institutions and other not-for-profit organisations based in Germany are invited to develop projects with local partner organisations in the Global South.

The call has two thematic priorities:

  • ‘Green skills for local climate action’ will support projects combining climate action with economic development and social inclusion. Activities could include community-based renewable energy, sustainable agriculture and low-emission construction, alongside measures to develop green skills and income opportunities, particularly for women, young people and marginalised groups.
  • ‘Future proof coasts: digital and practical solutions for marine ecosystems’ focuses on protecting and restoring marine and coastal ecosystems. Projects should develop locally rooted stewardship, accessible digital approaches to biodiversity monitoring and greater community involvement in conservation and management.

The call comes amid renewed international attention on both climate change and biodiversity, with the upcoming COP31 under the UN climate framework and CBD COP17 providing important forums for countries to advance global commitments in these areas during 2026.

IKI is an initiative of the German Federal Government supporting climate action and biodiversity conservation in the Global South. Its Medium Grants provide between €300,000 and €800,000 for bilateral projects lasting two to three years.

An online information event for prospective applicants will take place on 19 November 2026.
