Leverhulme Trust Major Research Fellowships – Annual Call Now Open

The fellowship offers established researchers in the humanities and social sciences the opportunity to focus on a new piece of original research.

The Leverhulme Trust has issued its annual call for Major Research Fellowships, inviting applications from distinguished researchers in the humanities and social sciences across the UK. Established in 1925, the Trust is one of the country’s most prominent funders of academic inquiry, with a long-standing commitment to supporting original scholarship, particularly in fields often under-resourced by other funders.

The Major Research Fellowships are designed to provide established researchers with the opportunity to focus intensively on a significant piece of work over a period of two or three years. The scheme is specifically aimed at individuals whose progress on major research has been constrained by routine academic duties. By covering replacement salary costs, the programme releases successful applicants from their normal responsibilities, enabling them to devote uninterrupted time to the completion of their proposed project. Fellows may also apply for up to £6,000 per year in research expenses to support their work.

Applicants must hold an academic post at a UK university with research degree awarding powers. While candidates are expected to demonstrate scholarship of the highest calibre, they do not need to be of professorial standing. Proposals must outline clearly the intended research outcomes and demonstrate that the planned work can be completed within the fellowship period.
