Funding available for research organisations inside or outside of Ireland to conduct desk studies and research projects addressing specified topics in marine research.
The Marine Institute (Foras na Mara) is the public agency responsible for marine research, technology development and innovation in Ireland. It aims to develop a sustainable maritime economy and to safeguard Ireland’s marine heritage through activities including research, strategic funding, scientific advice and environmental monitoring. Principal research areas are food safety, marine technology, oceanography and fisheries, shipping, statistics, marine economics, aquaculture and genetics.
The objective of the Marine Institute’s Marine Research Programme is to provide funding to the marine sector in Ireland that will:
- Build new research capacity and capability.
- Enable sharing of existing knowledge and technology transfer.
- Increase competitiveness and opportunities for sustainable economic growth.
- Protect and conserve marine resources.
- Inform public policy.
- Increase public awareness of Ireland’s maritime resource and heritage.
Research priorities for 2021-2027 aim to support sustainable economic growth, promote innovation, protect marine ecosystems and inform policy, governance and regulation of the Irish marine sector.
