Now Open: NWO Adaptivity in Transitions

NWO invites proposals for research into adaptivity in three specific transition contexts.

The Nederlandse Organisatie voor Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek (NWO – Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research) has launched the call ‘Adaptivity in transitions’, inviting proposals that examine how systems, organisations and individuals can strengthen their capacity to adapt during major societal transitions.

The call seeks to generate insights and practical approaches that support resilience in dynamic contexts where disruptions, emerging opportunities and long-term objectives intersect. The call supports research focused on three areas: transition of the food system, transition to sustainable mobility and transition of the energy system in the built environment.

A total of €7 million is available. A minimum of €1.5 million and a maximum of €2 million in project funding may be requested. Up to four projects are expected to be funded. Co‑funding of at least 20% is a requirement. The maximum project duration is six years.

NWO will host an online information meeting on 20 January 2026 to outline the call and the submission process. Two in‑person collaborative workshops will take place on 2 February 2026 and 2 March 2026 to support networking and consortium development. Attendance at both workshops is compulsory for principal applicants intending to submit.
