Rachel Tanur Memorial Prize for Visual Sociology
Closing Date: 04/02/2025
Prize for students of social sciences to encourage the use of visual medium in their study.
The Rachel Tanur Memorial Prize for Visual Sociology recognises students in the social sciences who incorporate visual analysis in their work. It is named after Rachel Dorothy Tanur (1958–2002), an urban planner and lawyer who was an observer of living conditions and human relationships.
The purpose of the prize is to encourage students to work with photography as a visual medium in their study and understanding of social phenomena. The contest is open worldwide to undergraduate and graduate students in the social sciences. Students from diverse social science disciplines, with an interest in visual media, are encouraged to apply.
The prize will be judged by the International Sociological Association (ISA) Visual Sociology Research Committee and funded by a US research council. The US Social Science Research Council (SSRC) is an independent, international, non-profit organisation that fosters innovative research, nurtures new generations of social scientists, deepens how inquiry is practiced within and across disciplines, and mobilises necessary knowledge on important public issues.
