Thoma Foundation Opens Submissions for Art of the Spanish Americas Fellowships and Awards

Research fellowships and travel grants are available for scholars in visual arts history on the Spanish Americas.

The Carl & Marilynn Thoma Foundation, a US-based art foundation dedicated to advancing study of the art of the Spanish Americas, has opened applications for its annual fellowship and travel awards programmes.

Applications for both programmes are welcome from around the world. Applicants for all awards must be able to communicate and conduct research in both English and Spanish.

Marilynn Thoma Fellowship in Art of the Spanish Americas: Predoctoral and postdoctoral fellowships are available, providing unrestricted research funding devoted exclusively to the field of art of the Spanish Americas. Fellowships are expected to result in major measurable outcomes, such as museum exhibitions, dissertations, book publications, scholarly essays, or lecture series. Projects must relate to the history of painting and sculpture in viceregal South America (Bolivia, Chile, Peru etc), including South America. Predoctoral applicants must be at least 21 years old and be enrolled in a doctoral programme in a relevant field. Postdoctoral applicants must have a PhD in a relevant field conferred between 2016 and 2026. Predoctoral fellows will receive $50,000 for one year while postdoctoral fellows will receive $65,000 for 1-2 years.

Thoma Foundation Research and Travel Awards in Art of the Spanish Americas: Funding is available to support projects and research initiatives that will advance the field of the art of the Spanish Americas. This funding can be granted to scholars, curators, art historians or advanced graduate students working on their MA theses or PhD dissertations. These grants are meant to help defray the costs of research-related expenses. Eligible applicants are scholars, curators, art historians or advanced graduate students working on MA theses or PhD dissertations. Grants of up to $25,000 will be awarded for projects lasting up to six months.
