Grants will support research on prevention and treatment of gambling-related harms through UKRI’s Research Programme on Gambling.

UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) is inviting applications for gambling harms research grants within its Research Programme on Gambling (RPG), supported by the statutory levy on gambling operators. The levy was introduced via secondary legislation and commenced in April 2025, replacing voluntary industry contributions.

Led by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) on behalf of UKRI, the opportunity invites team-based applications that address any question or challenge that deepens understanding or supports solutions for the prevention and treatment of gambling-related harms. Interdisciplinary or multidisciplinary approaches are encouraged, although single discipline projects will also be considered. UKRI will use a managed portfolio approach to balance research topics and geographic regions.

Eligible applicants include UK higher education providers, UKRI institutes, independent research organisations approved by UKRI and public sector research establishments or NHS bodies approved by UKRI. International research organisations, other educational establishments, charities, government departments, social enterprises and UK registered businesses may apply as project co-leads where they can demonstrate capacity to manage significant research and innovation activity. Project leads must be based at an organisation eligible for UKRI support.

Awards may have a full economic cost (FEC) of up to £2 million for up to three years. UKRI will support 80% of the FEC.
